Police searching for Mikaeel Kular, the three-year-old boy whose disappearance on Wednesday sparked a desperate search, have found the body of a young boy. They have arrested a suspect believed to be Mikaeel’s mother.
Hundreds of local people had joined the search for the missing boy as concern mounted. Late last night, a body was discovered near Fife, an area which had not fallen within the original parameters of the search.
Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham said: "The investigation into the disappearance of Mikaeel Kular has been wide ranging and fast moving.
"As a result of these inquiries I can confirm that we have recovered the body of a young boy in Fife shortly before midnight. We have informed the family and the investigation continues.
"A person has been detained in connection with the death.
"I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has shown such a fantastic response to the incident in terms of assisting the police with searches and in terms of our appeals for information and coming forward to assist with information.
"Without such vital assistance the police cannot do their job assisting those who live and work in our communities.
"As a result of this development clearly there will now be no requirement for any further help in relation to searches in the Drylaw area."
Police are now conducting a forensic search of a property in Kircaldy which is believed to belong to the boy’s aunt. Reports that his mother, Rosdeep Kula is under arrest on suspicion of murder are thus far unconfirmed, but an arrest was made late last night, shortly before the recovery of Mikaeel’s body.
Neighbours, well wishers and members of the local community have been leaving floral tributes and cuddly toys near the boys house, and residents have not even begin to come to terms with the shock.
