Sir Cliff Richard is being investigated over an alleged sexual assault which is believed to have taken place back in 1985. The 73 year old singer is currently holidaying in Portugal and will undergo questioning by police upon his return to the UK.

Police have already searched Richard's home in Berkshire in relation to the allegation which was lodged with police recently. It is believed it relates to an event at Bramall Lane in Sheffield where preacher Billy Graham performed in 1985. A police statement said "A search warrant has been granted after police received an allegation of a sexual nature dating back to the 1980s. This involved a young boy under the age of 16 years."

In a statement released by Richard, he proclaimed his innocence saying "The allegations are completely false. Up until now I have chosen not to dignify the false allegations with a response, as it would just give them more oxygen. I am not presently in the UK but it goes without saying that I will cooperate fully should the police wish to speak to me. Beyond stating that today’s allegation is completely false, it would not be appropriate to say anything further until the police investigation has concluded."

The pop singer also seemed to be extremely irritated that the media were informed of police plans to search his property while he himself was not warned in advance saying "The police attended my apartment in Berkshire today without notice, except it would appear to the press."

This police investigation into Mr. Richards is not part of Operation Yewtree, set up by the Metropolitan Police in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal to investigate hundreds of complaints, although police on that operation will be kept updated on progress.
