A man charged with killing 9 people in a church shooting spree in South Carolina has reportedly admitted to wanting to start a "race war". 21 year old Dylan Roof has been arrested after entering a historic black church in Charleston and opening fire on innocent people.

Roof has been charged with 9 counts of first degree murder at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church where he sat in on a Bible study group before opening fire on unassuming group members. 6 women and 3 men were killed including the church's pastor Rev. Clementa Pinckney who was leading the study group.

Footage taken from inside the church right before he opened fire appeared to show Roof saying "You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. I have to do what I have to do." South Carolina governor Nikki R. Haley said "This is a state that is hurt by the fact that nine people innocently were killed" before adding that the State “absolutely will want him to have the death penalty."

Roof's uncle Carson Cowles expressed his disgust at his nephew's actions saying that he would like to be the one to put him to death should he get the death penalty. Cowles said "I'll be the one to push the button. If he's found guilty, I'll be the one to push the button myself. If what I am hearing is true, he needs to pay for it."

Cowles helped to identify Roof when Police released CCTV footage of him in an appeal to the public. Roof was arrested in Shelby, North Carolina which is 245 miles away from the Emanuel Church and he was armed with a gun at the time of his arrest. Police are investigating if the gun is the same one he used at the church and whether or not it is a gun given to him as a present by his father recently.
