'Floating City' emerges behind clouds above China's city of Foshan

On October 7, 2015 thousands of residents in Foshan, China, located in the south east coastal province of Guangdong, reported seeing a unique sight in the sky. Above them in the sky was a huge city full of skyscrapers that appeared from behind the clouds.

Chinese TV reported that a few days later this sight re-appeared in the southeast province of Jiangxi. Some of the witnesses recorded this via their phones. Like Foshan, within minutes the 'floating city' disappeared. In 2011 there was a similar bizarre sighting in east China over the city of Huangshan.

Weather experts believe it to be a mirage or a Fata Morgana. This can be seen on land or sea and involves the optical distortion and inversion of distant objects such as boats, islands and coastlines. Rays of light are bent when they pass through different temperatures creating various illusions.

But many Fata Morganas tend to be seen as city skyscrapers due to the stacking of these images. A common example of this is heat haze.

There are also many conspiracy theories behind this bizarre phenomenon. Some say it could have been a temporal vortex that opened to the parallel universe while others say it is part of Project Blues holographic beam technology testing out the reaction of people. The answers will remain a mystery.
