Graffiti artist Wanksy draws attention to potholes around Manchester

A graffiti artist has come up with a novel way to bringing attention to potholes in need of fixing in the Manchester area. Known as Wanksy, the artist's modus operandi is to draw penis shapes around potholes that are badly in need of repair.

In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Wanksy outlined his aims by drawing phallic shapes around the potholes. He said "The roads of Manchester are in an appalling state, especially around Bury. I have cyclist friends who have been hospitalised. They damage vehicles."

He also added that he plans to expand his mission to a wider geographical area saying "Sometimes it's hard to know which pothole caused the damage because there are so many. When I've finished in Ramsbottom, I'll move on to the rest of Manchester".

The name Wanksy is a nice play on the name of famous graffiti artist Banksy whose identity is also unknown to the general public. While his paintings may look crude and unsavoury, Wanksy makes sure to use washable paint that can easily be removed so as not to damage public roads in a permanent manner.

However, Wanksy's actions do not sit well with the local council with a spokesperson for Bury Council saying "The actions of this individual are not only stupid but incredibly insulting to local residents." The spokesperson felt that Wanksy is acting in an unresponsible manner adding "Has this person, for just one second, considered how families with young children must feel when they are confronted with these obscene symbols as they walk to school?"

Despite those grievances, it appears that his painting is getting results too with potholes getting fixed. He said "People will drive over the same pothole and forget about it. Suddenly you draw something amusing around it, everyone sees it and it either gets reported or fixed."

So move over Banksy, there is an artist on the scene with a nobler cause of making British roads safer for all users. You can keep track of Wanksy's progress on his Twitter account where he posts pictures of potholes before and after getting fixed.
