A report from South Korea's National Intelligence Service reveals that the North Korean Defence Chief was publicly executed by an anti-aircraft gun. Hyon Yong Chol, whose official title was North Korea’s People’s Armed Forces Minister, was charged with treason after falling asleep at a recent event.
66 year old Hyon Yong Chol was apparently gunned down by an anti-aricradt gun in front of a large crowd at a shooting range late last month shortly after attending an international security conference in Moscow in early April. The event he fell asleep at had been attended by Kim Jong Un who felt him failing to stay awake showed disloyalty.
Since taking power in 2011, over 70 officials have been purged with the most high profile being Kim's own uncle Jang Song Thaek in 2013 for treason. The National Intelligence Service has reported that Kim has executed 15 senior officials in 2015 alone.
Purges of elder officials are common in North Korea ever since Kim took over as Dear Leader of the Hermit Kingdom in 2011 when he replaced his father Kim Jong Il. However, some analysts believe that such a sigh rate of executions show that Kim is felling very insecure in his position and is using gruesome public executions to show there is a heavy price to be paid for disloyalty.
