How to understand modern art

Modern art is a mystery to most of us. Those who sneer at modern art paintings often say that their three-year old could have done it, but that’s simply not true. Modern art is a gift of the imagination rather than a simple reproduction of life that’s shown in other forms of art.

There’s no right and wrong. No black and white with modern art. Abstract art is open to interpretation. That’s the point of it, and it’s the most beautiful thing about modern art.

Abstract art doesn’t tell you: “This is what I am about” so you need to develop a sense of the artist’s work if you really want to full appreciate a piece of art.

An open and enquiring mind is needed to understand abstract art. You need to “enter the painting” and see where it takes you. This form of art gives you the freedom to explore artwork while assigning your own meaning to it. This means that you and your partner will rarely agree on what a piece means. This personal process allows you to understand the work’s meaning for yourself.

Don’t be misled into thinking that the artist could not produce a portrait or a landscape because these guys understand composition and have a deep understanding of the workings of colour, they just express themselves individually.

“If it doesn’t look like anything, it’s not about anything”. This is another misconception that most people have when they gaze on modern art. This confusion can be threatening for some people who aren’t used to assigning their own meaning to a piece.

The basic truth is that abstract art is not “about nothing”. It’s about colour, form, lines, texture, composition and pattern. It’s as much an expression of the artist’s feelings as any other form of art. It’s just harder to decode.

Pablo Picasso once said: “Everyone wants to understand art. Why not try to understand the song of a bird? …people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree.” How true that is.
