Pros and cons of being in the European Union

The premise on which the European Union is founded is to create a single market with a political, monetary and economic union. Hence, freedom of movement of goods, services and people is an advantage of being an EU member.

Citizens from the 28 member countries can live, study and work in different countries without needing visas and work permits. Hence, admin paper work is largely reduced.

The single currency, the euro, is also an advantage for those who use it. Lower transaction costs, elimination of exchange rate uncertainties and price transparencies are some of the benefits of the euro.

Unfortunately, being an EU member comes with a price. The major disadvantage is that it costs to become a member of the EU. The rate of contribution of each country to EU coffers is usually a percentage of the GDP which varies from one member to another.
