Weird political parties around the world

In the UK there are two main political parties and the Liberal Democrats. After that you have a collection of weakly supported odd-ball parties like the UK Independence Party. Across the world though there are some really weird political parties.

The Objectivist Party is a party in the USA that focuses on defending self-interest and freedom from government intervention. They’ve been around since 2008 when US lawyer and blogger Tom Stevens decided that it was time for a change in American politics.

The Boston Tea Party is another American party that was established in recent times. These guys first appeared on the political landscape in 2006. The libertarian party is named after the Boston Tea Party of 1773 in which Americans rebelled against new taxes charged on the distribution of tea in North America. Apparently the use of the name is supposed to represent the party’s “pro-freedom” stance.

The American Vegetarian Party aren’t just against meat eating. They also hate alcohol, tobacco and medicine. No wonder they’re not very popular in the States.

Gracie Allen, a popular comedian from the 1940s, launched The Surprise Party as a joke. She went on radio announcing that she’d be President someday. Of course she was only kidding but that didn’t stop her gaining masses of support from the public.

The Rhinoceros Party of Canada, which began in 1963, was another party created for a laugh. Stuff like repelling the law of gravity and promising to store all the country’s nuclear waste on the floor of the senate.
